A lino cut is a relief print taken from a lino block which has been cut into, using special cutting tools. The raised areas of the block produce the required image when ‘inked up’ and printed.

Printing Process

Ink is applied to the lino block using a roller; the paper is then placed onto the inked surface. When printing by hand the surface of the paper is carefully rubbed using either a tablespoon or a special tool called a baren. This process of printing using a circular baren was the standard method of the Japanese Ukiyo-e school. Larger lino blocks are often printed mechanically using relief printing presses.
